Certainly not a stance you want to take after losing your first game as the head coach. Not to mention it was a home game against a conference opponent and rival, no less.

As for Florida State, I never really got the assumption that they'd be back to an elite team in year one with a head coach. They'll get there, but it's going to take time. Some serious issues on that offensive line

I honestly feel bad for Francois. He is a good QB, but he will never have the protection he needs to make plays. Lord help him when he plays Clemson. Virginia Tech is doing some really good things, like Andrew said. Justin Fuente is doing an amazing job in just his third year there.

I, personally, hope it's sooner. Lawrence is the future of the team, but co-OC Jeff Scott said a few days ago that they want to use each QB in a rotation. That usually doesn't go well (Auburn tried it last year), but the offensive coaches seem to think it will.

For NC State, they need to get the run game going against Georgia State today. They only had 83 rushing yards against James Madison last week and will have to be able to run the ball against West Virginia next week to keep Will Grier off the field

Hey all, I’m the sports editor for hs Cavalier Daily at Virginia. I think the Hoos have a decent shot against Indiana this week, as long as Bryce Perkins and the run game can bruise the defense. From the defensive standpoint, the linebackers will need to contain Peyton Ramsey — the secondary will hold up well against him but the linebackers have to neutralize his running ability to slow their offense down.

For UNC, the Tar Heels must run the ball effectively. Nathan Elliott ran for 8 carries and 53 yards in the second half on Saturday and UNC outscored Cal 17-7. It allowed the offense to open up. Defensively, UNC must limit the run. The Tar Heels run defense was suspect last year, but ECU only ran for 68 yards in the opener. This is a must-win game for UNC to save its season

Hi all, Alec Sawyer with Technician at NC State. Like andrew mentioned, getting production from the running game has been a huge issue. The Pack also really needs to step up in the secondary, which has looked lost at times against James Madison and Georgia State. The secondary was the biggest weakness for NC State last year, and that looks to be the case again (at least defensively). The Wolfpack’s secondary needs to figure things out quickly with Will Grier and Co. coming to town Saturday

It's tough to judge, in the ACC especially, because the competition is just so thoroughly deep across the board. There's really no such thing as an easy path in this conference...you're gonna end up playing UNC, Duke, Miami, Virginia, etc. With that being said, Pitt did get a decent luck of the draw in the sense that the Panthers don't have to play any of those aforementioned schools twice. That's a break because it'll spare our young bucks a little bit of embarrassment in what will be a rebuilding year for the program

Football wise, Saturday is going be a big prove it game for UVA. We've never done very well against Petrino and this looks like the year the Hoos can get a win, favored at home. The offensive trio of Perkins/Ellis/Zaccheaus was incredibly exciting to watch that week and I'm looking forward to see if they can keep their momentum going this weekend

This is an interesting week for NC State football. They travel to Marshall after both teams had their games cancelled by the hurricane last week. This will be a good test for the Pack, Marshall is a good program and played them tough in the first half at home last year.

I'm pretty excited for the State showdown. UVA has a a great secondary, but struggles with big plays at times, so they will have to limit those and neutralize Finley if they want to squeeze out a win. It will be a clash of two really cool and different offenses -- will probably come down to turnovers and big plays.

Honestly, it's gonna be a test for tech this week, without our starting qb or leading tackler, this will really be when we see if justin Fuente's new recruits can step up into new roles and put up a fight against a team that is the best he has seen so far at tech

Clemson has had plenty of QB drama this week. Lawrence gives the Tigers the best chance on offense (97 points vs 52 points), but Bryant led us past Texas A&M this year and Miami the year before. He's great in big games.

Jon Rothstein just reported that some ACC basketball programs have been told not to schedule games on the first 2 days of next year’s season bc the league is planning conference games to open the year. Good idea, or do teams need the warm up tourneys before ACC action?

I agree with Camden. I don't like the idea of important conference games, that help determine conference tournament seeding, quality wins, etc so early in the year. Teams won't have had a chance to build chemistry, work out kinks, etc

Virginia has an advantageous schedule, and I think the de facto championship game with VT is a game they can take. Teams have been able to run the ball effectively against the Hokies, and Virginia is as its best when Perkins and Ellis get going on the ground. Hall and Thornhill in the secondary would provide a tough test for a freshman quarterback like Willis, even on the road

As far as basketball goes, the fact that Clemson ranks in the AP preseason is a bit of a surprise to me. We did great last year, but losing our best pure shooter, Gabe DeVoe, I thought for sure would keep us from being ranked.

Trent and Alec, a big game tomorrow in C’ville. Can UVA continue to set the pace in the Coastal, or will Pitt be able to slow Perkins and stay in the mix?

Avatar for Alec Dougherty UVA

I think it will come down to UVA stopping Pitt's run game -- the run defense has been phenomenal, but few teams the Hoos have faced pound the rock like Pitt does and they have enough backs to stay fresh. we got some crucial LB depth back this week with Jordan Mack, so if the unit plays to it's potential, Virginia should be able to disrupt Pitt's offense enough to win.

Pitt is always thought to predict, so it depends on which Pitt team decides to show up. They've played Virginia well in the past, but Virginia's stout run defense doesn't present a favorable matchup. I'm just hoping it'll be a close and entertaining game... it will be a big win for whoever comes out on top, with the winner getting the inside track for the Coastal title, especially considering Miami and VT still have to play each other

NC State likely needs at least a win over Clemson to lock up a spot in the Big Dance. The Tigers could also punch their ticket with a win there, so that should be a big one. Give me Duke to win the tournament if Zion is fully healthy, Virginia if not.
