As a Clemson grad, thank you Juliane! Not sure we will see 2 teams from the same conference making it into the playoffs again under the current 4-team setup so I don’t have UGA making it and they lost a lot on both sides of the ball. I think the Big 12 is left out. Bama, Clemson, Washington, Wisconsin Can you pick your alma mater to win? 🤔
Julianne, you don’t feel like OSU is going to be affected by the Urban drama? Can’t, lie....I hope they are....but trying to be non-biased here, they are going to have a rough start & TCU is a tough game for them with or without their fearless leader. They are loaded up defensively, but I’m not sure about Haskins. This may be my new favorite thread to follow through January though👏👏👏
Hey Julie! I think OSU could honestly go either way. The Urban drama could absolutely distract them toward the greater goal and they are not as “used to” Haskins. It’s never quite the same playing for anyone other than the main squeeze in a head coach. However I have noticed through my own playing days as well as watching a lot of teams over the years rise to the occasion when adversity hits. This is adversity for them and they may respond with more desire and tenacity and be more dangerous. I think how they respond in all this with wins or losses will show A LOT about their character and strength as a whole ! So we shall see.
Clemson and Alabama will absolutely be in the playoff. Honestly, I'm not sure we're allowed to have one without them. Beyond that, none of the other true contenders have a non-conference schedule to stand on. So, we're going to test my theory that the sport ONLY pays lip service to who you play. In truth, Alabama' NC sked is trash, too. But they're Alabama and can likely lose 3 times and still find their way in. So....I'll take Washington (who opens w/Auburn in Atlanta) and Georgia who will have no excuse not to be 12-0 heading to SEC title game.
Trick question. Jon Gruden dismisses Khalil Mack's impact on a defense and wngineered a truly terrible trade with the Bears. We can debate all day long as to whether or not Mack is worth a contract larger than Aaron Donald -- a truly transcendent player deserving of blowing up the salary model for a DT. But giving up Mack, a former defensive player of the year, AND a 2nd round pick for two 1st rounders from Chicago is borderline criminal. If the Bears are good -- and they're all in on being good -- the difference between their 2020 #1 and the Raiders #2 might not be so much. I'm not sure Gruden knows that it's 2018. This is not going to be a great football reunion.
Agreed 100%. This Gruden experiment seems to be destined for a bad ending by starting with a move like this. No way I give Mack more money than Donald but in the context of the deal it makes sense for the Bears to do it. Intriguing 1st week matchup with the Rams/Raiders... the team that believed in their defensive stud and the one who didn’t.
This is the greatest era in modern men's tennis history. Federer (20), Nadal (16) and Djokovic (13) are three of the top 5 players of all time. With that said, Nadal has a winning record vs Federer (23-15) and has beaten him 8 of 11 times at Grand Slams. But Novak Djokovic has a winning record vs Nadal AND Federer. Bottom line, Fed is the oldest and dominated before Nadal and Djokovic showed up. Fed is the GOAT. But, Rafa and Djoker are top 5 all time players. FWIW, Sampras and Laver the other two.
The NFL is crazy....Saints over Steelers....yes, Pittsburgh gets back to the Super Bowl in spite of all the craziness. As for Bell, he'll sit out the first six games and return after the bye week. He's not sitting the whole year because he'd still be under control of the Steelers. He can sit 10 before that happens. This is the second year in a row the Steelers have been an interpersonal mess. The anthem debacle a year ago and now with 60% of their offensive line openly criticizing Bell's holdout. That's bad form and it's on Mike Tomlin to figure that out. Ultimately, however, you don't have to like each other to be successful. See the 1978 Yankees
Winning solves many problems but this one seems too big because it's a cumulative situation from previous year. Ravens are loving what's going on in the Steel City and Flacco just might have the motivation that he needed with the hype of Lamar Jackson to take his spot which isn't going to happen. And how good is the NFC South? Legit contenders...
Sam Darnold set the national storyline especially how he started with a pick 6 and showed the type of resilience that you wouldn't expect from a rookie QB in his first start which made the Browns & Giants say "we missed on that one" but how can you not come away being amazed what old man Ryan Fitzpatrick did against the Saints. No one expected that.
I'm a Jets fan, so this is low-hanging fruit for me. Sam Darnold gives what was probably a mediocre team a huge shot of adrenaline. He recovered from an opening pass pick six to be great the rest of the way, though the Lions total ineptitude made the game drama-free. I'm not sure the answer isn't Kirk Cousins with the Vikings. He wasn't spectacular, but with Minnesota's defense, he doesn't have to be. While no big fan of Cousins, and there's no way on the earth I'd have paid him $28 million a year -- GUARANTEED -- for three years, he's an upgrade on Case Keenum.
I’ll answer this one on Stewwy. She is an absolute legend already and has proven herself at a young age yes. But knowing her and the way she is it will never satisfy her especially after other WNBA players have more than 1 pro title under their belts! That competitive edge will keep her juices flowing for years to come. The last 3 years before this seasons championship she has been on a losing Seattle storm team and finally they made the turn around but she improved SO much this ofF season into summer- she is just scratching the surface of what she can be as a pro believe it or not! She got stronger this year and became even more of a leader and grew into her own. Looking forward to seeing her development but this is certainly a turning point in her career!
Why are we dealing in absolutes? He’s clearly on his way to being great. He’s a lot like Aaron Rodgers in his athleticism and how he moves around to throw. He’s got one of the best arms I’ve ever seen, so that separates him from the other young QBs. We’ve got three months of football left to play. I’ll hold off on mvp talk for now
Easy pick for the Warriors having the upper hand once again especially if Boogie Cousins comes back for post season which is highly possible but he’ll miss the entire regular season for the most part with that Achilles injury. But if he’s even 75% by then he will help them even more. I do think the Celtics will win the east too they are absolutely loaded once Hayward and Irving get their rhythm back. But the east to me is up for grabs now that Lebron went to the Lakers and he’s in the western conference. I think it will be a dog fight for sure but Celtics and Warriors are my pick for the finals also!
Welcome in RJ! Very easy to pick Warriors and the Jimmy Butler situation is interesting. I'm also really intrigued to see how the Kawhi rental experiment works out in Toronto. That continues to fly under the radar. Sixers have the most upside with young talent regardless of what happened last night and I'll take a fully healthy Celtics squad to take down the Warriors. That's a big if though for the Celtics to remain healthy the entire season.
I worked in the G League for 7 years doing play by play, and I couldn't be more against this. For starters, I'm a huge college fan and don't want the game to be ruined more than it is. But beyond that, it is criminal how poorly prepared most of these kids are coming in because they had poor coaching in HS/AAU. Think the G League is loaded with great coaches at those salaries? I could go on but I'm getting heated. This might be the worst idea ever for the player...money included
Only thing new to this is the G-League connection to the NBA & the so-called contract dollar amount. One-and-done started in 2006 and players have always had the opportunity to bypass college for a year before being eligible for the NBA Draft. They could go overseas if they wanted but only a handful made that choice. As RJ pointed out regarding coaching, there is value to being coached by elite level college coaches even if it's for a year or 6 months. At the end of the day this will be for a very small % of players.
I think it’s kind of cool that we’re headed for a World Series without a scheduled “bullpen day”! Wait, you mean BOTH teams are going to use actual STARTING PITCHERS? What year is this? Key to this series, for me, is did David Price unlock good David Price with that great Game 5 start in Houston. I think Boston has a slight edge in SP and certainly on defense. What happens in LA when Alex Cora can’t DH J.D. Martinez? Mookie Betts to 2b? Betts is an elite RF. I’d be more inclined to have JD at first base unless he’s a complete mess there. If LA wins, I like Yasiel Puig for MVP. If it’s Boston, give me Mookie Betts. Boston in 5
If I was the Dodgers organization I’d strongly consider having Boston’s plane rerouted to Paris — not Texas. Boston is better in every phase and Dave Roberts’ curious decisions (keeping best players on the bench in favor of RH bats, pulling Baez in Game 1 for Alex Wood) have made it even more difficult to overcome the Red Sox. As I said the other day, Boston didn’t win 108 by accident. And if David Price and the bullpen are going to do THAT work the Dodgers are sunk. LA needs to hope Boston’s defense suffers when JD Martinez is forced into the field and someone (likely CF Jackie Bradley) has to come out. Dodgers better take advantage of the Sox’ game 3 and 4 starters, Rick Porcello and Nate Eovaldi.
It’s a great question and something we’ve been wrestling with here in DFW. On one hand, it’s a great talent acquisition and you wouldn’t get a better WR in free agency next year or in the draft. The cowboys scouting has been really good and they determined there aren’t any top flight WRs in the 2019 draft. So basically they are approaching the 2019 draft as our first round pick is Amari Cooper. The passing attack has been horrid. Is it Dak? Is it the scheme? The play calling? The Travis Frederick injury? It’s a little bit of all these things. I think he helps, but maybe not statistically like a WR1 should help. I think he will open up the field for Beasley, Gallup, and most importantly Zeke and the running game. So while our expectations for Cooper should be something...I’m not sure they should be first round worthy and I hope fans realize that when evaluating him for these final 9 games. He will be a dude. Labeling him as a WR1 though is kind of dangerous due to the circumstances.
This is always a tough one. You have to protect your players at all costs, especially your most important players. The league would be unwatchable if each team started their backup QB. I think asking a 250-300 pound person to instinctually shift their body weight is a difficult thing to do but you do have to start somewhere I guess. I just think in general I would like the league to have less penalties. Less illegal contact, less pass interference, even less holding calls. I know you have to call it when you see it but the refs have seemed kind of flag happy this year. I also have a problem with the number of replays. There’s just so many reviews, I think they should get rid of the booth review under two minutes and leave all replays up to coach challenges. If you get screwed on a call but you were out of challenges, well that’s your fault. I feel the league, especially college, needs to be careful with their time of game problem. College games are 4 hours long. 20 Minute halftime and the clock stops on every first down. Like why does that need to happen? Sorry I went off on a tangent there, but I do feel there’s a penalty/rules problem right now in general.
Philly got better. Golden Tate will be great in their offense. I'd make the argument that Green Bay got better by subtraction, but I don't get trading Clinton-Dix. Bigger question for me is why didn't Tampa trade Jameis Winston? Why didn't Oakland unload more players? Same with Denver.
As loyal as GB has been to McCarthy, you have to wonder if serious changes aren’t coming down the pike? I’m not saying he gets canned, but maybe playcalling duties get taken away or something and new innocatjve OC comes into the mix. The GB offense is outdated, and getting by because of Rodgers. The NFC North fascinating because all teams are in it, and GB/DET sell major parts, the Bears lose their starting guard for 8 weeks, and the Vikings stand pat. Kind of makes me feel like I know who will win the division now.
13-0 would be a fantastic year. It will get the Knights into another New Years 6 bowl game against a Power 5 opponent. But, the reality is that they’d need to be competing with a bunch of 2-loss teams (or worse) to have ANY chance of being selected. Their best non-conference win is Pitt. And while non-conference schedules don’t matter a flip for Alabama or Clemson (though the Tigers have played a good one this year), it’s the ONLY way a team like UCF has a chance. Oh, and allowing 40 to Temple in a game that it appeared to get the benefit of some questionable calls, eliminates the “eye test” for UCF.
Under the current system there's no chance UCF gets a shot. Too much bias for the Power 5 schools. They've had 2 games (Georgia Tech & UNC) in the past 2 seasons cancelled which would have at least helped build a story with wins but to be taken seriously they will need to be in a Power 5 conference or the playoffs are expanded.
The hope is that the playoffs get expanded right? Needs to happen. Looks like UCF will be kind of a sacrificial lamb, and we will look back on these two years (if they finish the job) as a team who should have received playoff consideration but didn’t because of a lame 4 team playoff system. The 4 team system is stupid and needs to be done with. 8 or 16 makes all the sense in the world, and would make the product something that could actually compete w the nfl
The cancelled games for UCF we’re both against teams that would not have helped them at all. So, at most it gives them two more wins. I think the current system is the best one. Musical chairs and it doesn’t guarantee any conference — except for the SEC — anything. Conversation has always driven college football. 4 teams is constant conversation.
That's right. Those 2 teams wouldn't help & GT would have beaten them. UCF would have been baffled by Paul Johnson's offense. As a Clemson grad, it's the game each year I dread and fortunately the 5-Stars on defense in the past few years has finally been able to counter balance that quirky offense. I guess Deshaun Watson helped as well. College football will also be conversations about the usual suspects and that won't change.
This sounds like a great one for Bob, but as the resident Mets fan let me just say that I have no EARTHLY IDEA. Let me credit the Wilson’s for thinking outside the box in hiring a former agent, but is THAT the guy who can build up their player development? Who can truly bring the Mets a closer relationship with analytics? Maybe the fact that he was the agent for Jacob de Grom AND Noah Syndergaard will help them keep both pitchers. The jury is going to be out on this hire for a while.
I thought Patrick Mahomes would be good, I didn’t think it would come this easy for him. I think the biggest disappointment is a Packers team at 3-4-1 and just kind of seems like another wasted year of elite level play from Rodgers. The NFC is a bloodbath, teams just beating up on each other. Should be fun.
Garrett getting canned after the season is super realistic, but I truly don’t think Jerry wants to fire him. These last 8 games will kind of determine his fate. New scheme next year is likely, and it’s Dak’s final year on the rookie deal. Dak is the QB next year. This was never a make or break deal for him, it’s always been next year.
I guess it could be, we do have a pair of 9-1 teams. But, as I said before the season, I think the two best teams are going to end up being the Saints and Steelers. What New Orleans has done to the league the last 6 weeks is staggering — essentially beating them by an average of 40-20. And, now that the soap opera (For Whom Will the Bell Toll) is over, I think we’ll see Pittsburgh continue to take the shape of a post season killer. Can’t wait to see the Patriots in Pittsburgh in week 15.
Seems automatic that Bama gets in with one loss because it's all we've heard all season long that they are the most dominant team in the country. Not sure if they get in this year if Ohio St. and Oklahoma are sitting there as conference champions with only one loss. Last year Bama got in over Ohio St. even though they won the Big 10 because the Buckeyes had 2 losses.
Assuming chalk.... The debate will be Oklahoma v Ohio State...that's it. But if Georgia beats Alabama (possible though unlikely) the SEC gets 2 for the second straight year. Hard to imagine undefeated Notre Dame being passed by Georgia and one of Ohio State or Oklahoma. However, if that were to happen, I'd be tickled. My prediction is.... Alabama Clemson Notre Dame Oklahoma
Obviously the Big 12 championship game at Noon eastern, SEC Champ at 4 eastern, and the Big 10 and ACC championship at 8 eastern could all have playoff ramifications. As for Sunday, the Big game for me is the Vikings/Patriots in the afternoon and Steelers/Chargers on Sunday night. And a good one on MNF with Wash/Philly. Overall an uninspiring NFL slate this weekend, but the college schedule is legit!
I think Tua edges Kyler, but I also think Kyler creates the most important recommendation the NFL Draft Advisory board has ever made. Will be interesting to see if they give him a first round grade. A 5 hour bus ride to games is a reality check for these kids sometimes, I’m sure he won’t want to be hanging in the minors too long with the NFL looming in the distance.
As a Heisman voter, I'm not allowed to reveal my choice. But, we'll know soon(er) enough anyway. As for Murray and the NFL... Only way he's in the NFL is if football is the sport he really loves. Maybe he's a late first round pick. Maybe. But there's roughly $10 million waiting for him with the A's and if baseball doesn't pan out you can always go back to football.
Garrett will be on the hot seat until the end of time because he’s boring and the media creates those hot seat narratives, and because he is not really great at time and game management. He deserves credit. This team has never quit on him and he’s been here for over 10 years in some capacity. To keep his message from going stale is really impressive. The Cowboys beating the Saints and Bears beating the Rams really shows you how up for grabs the NFC truly is.
First, who is Adam Ottavino? I think you'd have to be in a 20-team fantasy league to have ever heard of him before. Next, I guess he just thinks Ruth and other players of that era were so stupid that they wouldn't adjust to the changing time. Sure, if Ruth tried to swing a 42-oz (or whatever it was) bat, he'd struggle against upper 90's heat. But, all he'd have to do would be to put down his between innings hot dog and grab a lighter bat and light Ottavino on fire. This stuff just makes him sound ignorant.
