It may sound cliche but it’s the truth: 100 percent the answer is that I was lucky enough to find the perfect woman and she agreed to marry me. Then on top of it I’m a workaholic who loves his job.

Hurting peoples feelings seems to be the constant theme in comedy now. How do you feel about the new extreme wave of 'PC culture' as it relates to comedy?
5
2

BVW
I think about 10 percent is valid as there are somethings and words that are not funny and are too hurtful. And 90 percent is that people are either too thin skinned and/or are looking to be angry about something. But on top of this I think that 99 percent of people who watch stand up don’t complain and the 1 percent who do complain are taken way too seriously by the powers that be.

The extremely loud extreme minority. A lot of shows and stand up that I grew up with would never have a chance today from Eddie Murphy's Raw to something as simple as Married With Children. Do you feel that 'PC culture's has negatively affected comedy? Do you often seen comedians change their comedy in efforts to not offend?

Brian - what would you say is the biggest difference between today’s standup specials vs specials from the 80s/90s?
6

BVW
I think it has negatively affected comedy to some degree, but it fluctuates very much from artist to artist. I saw a comic recently lock a cut and call us twice to open the cut because he was worried he was going to offend. He had a joke that was 10000 percent anti rape but was worried that because he said the word “rape” we should take the joke out. As an example.

I think the main difference between 80s and early 90s are that it’s different time now in that stand up has become its own genre and people watch and talk about comics in a similar way as they do athletes and specific games. That was not the case in 80s.

My suggestion re getting your first special is to focus exclusively on your material and to get up as often as possible and refine refine refine. If you do that, everything else will follow. Like getting a manager, booking first tv spot, etc. it’s also important to know and never forget how hard a career you’ve chosen and to keep that in mind on the tough days when it seems like nothing is going right. Because it just takes time. Different lengths for different people. But as long as u don’t give up u will prevail.

Not to beat a dead horse but it’s all about the material. In my opinion the public turns on a stand up special to laugh. So the fastest a comic can get to the mic and tell jokes, and those jokes are all some degree of A+ is key.

I've seen women not get as many opportunities on stages and in comedy, like every other sport, practice makes perfect. Fortunately with allies like yourself giving platforms to a diverse range of voices regardless of gender, race, religion, color, ethnicity etc we will see a growth in all forms and learn that material not characteristics is what makes an artist mainstream or niche.

It’s soooooooooooooo original, the act. I saw their tape almost a year ago and was just blown away because almost every minute of it I’d never seen before. It was cutting edge without trying to be cutting edge. I see a lot of tapes that try to be shocking but it usually isn’t. There is a 10 minute section in their show that’s literally never been done before.
