Hey Jess! I lucked out and had a friend who opened a dispensary that was "technologically challenged." I went from IT guy/receptionist to a buyer to head of marketing in around a year. Cannabis has the same needs as most businesses, so there are lots of places to get a start

Hi Emily! For me, I'm doing a lot of judging on a strain before I ever take a hit. Looking at structure and making sure it has a distinct nose, then rolling the smoke around my mouth without inhaling. "Dry hits" are also a great way to get a sense of flavor.

The Grow-Off is something I've been doing since 2016. Everyone grows the same strain so it's an apples-to-apples test of growing ability. Then, everything is judged by lab results. Leave it to a pot critic to run a competition where no one gets high...

Emily, I really like your question. I personally think there is a big difference between tasting and experiencing cannabis. You’re right that every session could be different. A lot depends on the potency of THC, the presence of other ingredients, and the expectation that a judge has prior to consumption.

This is why a blinded judging process, like the one we use for Cultivation Classic, is so important. Getting rid of bias and expectation is important to truly judge the characteristics of a given flower.

Dr. Adie brings up a great point. I would sample a cultivar a few different times before writing up one experience I felt was the most indicative of what people should expect.

Hi Sanders, TGO and Cultivation Classic are about to launch a collaboration in Oregon. We’re hoping that next year, we can hybridize our processes: Oregon growers competing to see what they can produce with identical genetics, while our team of Consumer ambassadors evaluates the effects of those genetically identical flowers. Stay tuned in 2020!

Pharmacology is the science of how drugs interact with the human body to produce medical benefits and different psychological states. Because cannabis contains so many biologically active molecules, it’s pharmacology is particularly more interesting and complex, compared to other substances.

Great question Heather. I think a few different things are important: is it marketable? That is does it have treats that typically tend to sell well on a dispensary level? In the past, this has been potent THC products, however this is changing.

I think I’m more important question to consider, however, is whether or not you are proud of it. If it’s distinct, special, or produces an effect that feels superior to your products in the rest of your garden, this is probably a good indicator that it’s ready for spotlight!

I'd ask myself "what's the goal?" if you're looking to build a brand on it, you need a marketing plan just like any product release. If you just want to put it out there, don't worry what other people think if you're confident she's stable, smells good, and has the effect you like

Another important thing that we have learned is that that aroma of a flower matters a lot. If it smells great, people tend to like it.

The most important thing about opening a dispensary is to make sure you are cool with your neighbors. Most clubs get shut down because of neighborhood complaints.

Ngaio is right. New markets can require 500k+ in escrow just to get a license. Find something that is adjacent and you can actually get tax write-offs and access to banking, two things dispensaries struggle massively with.

I think retailers that have obviously made an effort to be inclusive stand out. There are some places that frankly feel too fancy, and others feel no different than a corner bodega. I like places that can appeal to anyone.
